JAPAN’S NEW TOYOTA LAND CRUISER PRADO SUV IS WHAT THE U.S. GETS IN 2024

In case you had any doubts, the next Toyota Land Cruiser is coming to the U.S., due around this time next year. Currently, Toyota is prepping the Japanese version dubbed “Prado 250 Series” for later this year. This is after it was first announced to be ready at the end of last year. The significance of the three-row Prado 250 Series SUV is that it previews almost exactly the Land Cruiser version we get.

What kind of power will the new Land Cruiser have?

According to Japan’s Best Car, two engines will be available in Japan, the 2.8-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder and the 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid. The hybrid will be the same as found in the new Tacoma pickup. We doubt the diesel engine will make it into a U.S. Land Cruiser.

Focussing on the hybrid, it will feature 243 kW hooked to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Supplementing this package is a 36 kW motor fed by a 1.87 kWh battery. There is also speculation that a 2.7-liter engine may find its way into the Prado. If so, it will be the base engine, as the gas engine has no hybrid system or turbocharging.

Is the coming Land Cruiser a large- or midsize SUV?

The coming Prado-derived Lexus GX will come with either the hybrid four-cylinder or a twin-turbo V6. Whether the V6 might make its way into the U.S. Land Cruiser or stay exclusive to the GX is unknown. We do know the new Prado gets a GR Sport version that Toyota sprinkles over several models outside of the U.S. and is available in the Corolla here.

As the new Prado is larger than the current version, this equates to it being a midsize three-row SUV, though it will probably be marketed as a full-size. The overall length is almost 193 inches with a 122-inch wheelbase. Those are the exact same dimensions as the Chevrolet Blazer and similar dimensions to the Ford Explorer.

When will deliveries happen in Japan?

In Japan, the new Prado will debut later in the year, with deliveries slated for early 2024, barring no further delays. It was expected to arrive sometime last year, but other new model development and the pace that the current Prado was selling caused the release to be pushed back.

As we inch closer to the Toyota Prado’s debut, we’ll have more images and details. Until then, we have Best Cars’ speculation rendering to whet your appetite.
